But what about THE music?
Our two intrepid pastors knew the importance of good music, but what a dilemma! Contemporary Christian music was so hokey and Praise songs/choruses were far too individualistic and triumphal, with terrible poetry to boot. What to do? Traditional church hymnody was great, but in a post-Christian era how many folks can be expected to know the tune to ‘Hyfrodol’ in all four parts?
And then, almost as quickly as the mire enveloped them, resolution came to the flummoxed pastors. For it just so happened that on that very afternoon, while stopping by a friend’s house, they met one Doug Hansen, a handsome, soft-spoken and charming guitarist. Upon hearing the vision for this peculiar new church and Corey and Robin’s musical dilemma, Doug grabbed his banjo and played a couple of Hank Williams tunes for them. After hearing Doug’s glorious finger picking, the two pastors engaged in prayerful silent meditation and immediately invited Doug to join them. Doug’s mission? Pull together a talented band. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Music at The Potter’s House now embodies a kind of eclectic mash-up of the great old hymns of the faith and some new ones penned by Country Gospel/Bluegrass Gospel greats (Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Alison Krauss, Elvis Presley, The Carter Family, Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, Doyle Lawson, etc.). You might hear some originals by The Potter’s House Band or some tunes from previous guest artists who have blessed us with their musical offerings.
With distinguished musicians from near and far stopping by to play for our House Concerts, our regular friends and affiliates are also invited and encouraged to offer their musical gifts to the community through our Guest Artist spot. Music at The Potter’s House is always inclusive.
