The Lectionary

We almost always preach our sermons from the Revised Common Lectionary, a suggested three year cycle of the most important scripture readings. The scripture readings for each Sunday include: a passage from the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament), one from the psalms, one from the New Testament writings (Acts, Revelation, Paul's letters), and a passage from the Gospels. The gospel readings for year A are derived from Matthew's Gospel, year B from Mark and John, and year C from Luke.

Because holistic spiritual formation is an important facet of our ministry, the RCL supports this by offering a diverse and rich experience with scripture that follows the events of The Christian Year (Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Holy Week, Easter, Pentecost) and other special Sundays.

The RCL is used, in some form or another, by a number of churches throughout the world including The United Church of Christ, The Disciples of Christ (Christian Church), The American Baptist Church, The Episcopal Church (USA), The Evangelical Lutheran Church, The United Methodist Church, The Reformed Church of America, and The Presbyterian Church (USA).

If you would like to read the scripture passages for the sermon ahead of time, you may look them up here.
